To begin your education towards becoming a paramedic, you must graduate from high school with 30 general level credits, including grade 12 English and Math at general level, grade 11 or 12 Biology at general level, and grade 11 or 12 chemistry at general level. You must also have first aid/ CPR training, a class F driver’s license (some leeway may be granted for students not old enough to get a class F upon entry to college), as well as maintain certain immunizations.
You can achieve your Paramedic diploma of a Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) level by completing the Paramedic Program at any accredited Ontario College. In the later stages of the Paramedic Program, the students are required to complete a preceptorship, which is where they work along-side a certified paramedic to gain real life experience. The County of Simcoe Paramedic Services provides preceptorships opportunities to Paramedic Program College students through a structured preceptorship program. Preceptorship inquiries should be directed to your College liaison. Once you have graduated from an accredited Post Secondary Paramedic Program, you must pass a 6-hour provincial standards exam called Advanced Emergency Medical Care Assistant (AEMCA). Once you have passed your AEMCA and have been offered employment with a Paramedic service, you will be required to pass Base Hospital Certification.
Additional requirements are defined in the Regulation 257/00 of the Ambulance Act.
