Midhurst/September 8, 2022 – This afternoon (September 8), I was saddened to learn of the passing of our monarch, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at Balmoral Castle, Scotland.
Since her accession to the throne in 1952, Queen Elizabeth II has been a champion of duty and service, and Her Majesty is much loved and respected around the globe for her devotion to her role as Queen of the Commonwealth. Her journey from a young girl who did not expect to be Queen, to an iconic and celebrated international figure is a great source of pride and inspiration for many people worldwide.
In 1947, on her 21st birthday, Queen Elizabeth II dedicated her life to public service “whether it be long or short”. Over the past 70 years, Her Majesty has offered steadfast leadership during times of great change and uncertainty. Throughout her long life, Queen Elizabeth II has always maintained her strong commitment to public and voluntary service, with links to more than 600 charities, military associations, professional bodies and public service organisations of which 36 are in Canada.
Earlier this year, the Commonwealth paid tribute to Her Majesty during her Platinum Jubilee. Queen Elizabeth II has been a consistent source of strength and hope, including during the pandemic, and June 2022 was an excellent opportunity to recognize and celebrate Her Majesty’s lifetime of achievements as our longest-reigning monarch.
Today, I join with those throughout Simcoe County who mourn the loss of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. During her reign, Queen Elizabeth II maintained a strong connection with Canada, visiting more times than any other commonwealth country.
