Hazardous Household Waste

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is found in every home. If not disposed of properly, these items can be harmful to people, animals and the environment.

Residential Hazardous Waste


​​​Ensure containers are clearly labelled, secured and leak-proof. Never combine products and keep Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) material separate from other materials in your load, as explosive or poisonous chemical reactions may occur.

  • Paints & stains
  • Oil, transmission and antifreeze fluids
  • Batteries
  • Fire Extinguishers
  • Oil filters & containers
  • Fluorescent ​bulbs & tubes
  • Gasoline (containers cannot be returned)
  • Solvents and household cleaners
  • Pool chemicals
  • Mercury thermostats
  • Pesticides (fungicides, herbicides, insecticides)
  • Fertilizers
  • Propane tanks and cylinders (must be 100lbs or less with the valves intact. Bonnets / collars are required for larger cylinders)​
  • Needles & syringes (containers must be leak-proof containers with tight-fitting, lockable lids, with clear bio-hazard label​)
  • ​Explosives (spent fireworks, flares, ammunition and gun powder)
  • Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors etc.

Still don’t know where things go?


Commercial Businesses that produce small quantities of hazardous waste are classified as “Small Quantity Generators” (SQG). These SQG’s must meet specific criteria outlined by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP).

Appointments to drop off hazardous waste must be pre-arranged with the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Lead Hand. No walk-ins will be accepted.

To ensure your hazardous waste will be accepted, the following will apply: 

  1. Maximum of 100 kg of hazardous waste per month.
  2. Individual containers cannot exceed 25 kg. 
  3. Do not combine the contents of separate containers .
  4. Containers must be sealed with no leaks.
  5. All containers must be labelled with the type of hazardous waste.
  6. A certificate label must be affixed to the containers ​​Sample Label​

T​he County of Simcoe reserves the right to limit items and quantities. Materials must be delivered in containers that can be left behind. If products are not in their original container, please label to identify the material type. ​
