Statement on the passing of the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, 18th Prime Minister of Canada (1939-2024)

Midhurst/March 1, 2024 – At the County of Simcoe, we collectively mourn with Canadians after the passing of the late Prime Minister, the Right Honourable Brian Mulroney. As the 18th Prime Minister of Canada, Mulroney helped to build and shape the Canada that we are so proud to call home today.

As Prime Minister from 1984-1993, his commitment to the environment, foreign affairs, human rights, the economy, and everyday Canadians leaves a lasting legacy that we are forever thankful for.

He brought free trade to Canada through the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), introduced the GST that provides financial stability to the federal government, and led the international fight against South Africa’s apartheid regime. Mulroney was recognized as the “greenest” Prime Minister for his work to pass the Environmental Protection Act (1988), which led to the creation of eight new national parks, and significantly reduce acid rain through the Acid Rain Accord.

His passion for Canada and its people came second only to his love for his family as Prime Minister Mulroney leaves behind his wife, Mila, four children (Caroline, Ben, Mark, and Nicolas), and 15 grandchildren. Our hearts go out to our own Member of Provincial Parliament for York-Simcoe, the Honourable Caroline Mulroney, President of the Treasury Board and Minister of Francophone Affairs, and her family for their loss.

As Warden for the County of Simcoe, and Mayor of Ramara Township, I offer my most heartfelt condolences to former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney’s family, friends, and supporters. His impact on Canada will forever be felt through his contributions to the fabric of our nation.
